Humble Boys

United. Undaunted. Humble.

Humble Boys is a nonviolent peacekeeping and de-escalation organization. We use observation, communication, de-escalation, and nonviolent intervention to reduce harm at public events.

Our Role

Humble Boys does not deploy to advance a political position. Our role is to reduce harm, protect peaceful civic participation, and respond to conduct rather than political affiliation.

When we deploy, personal politics and prejudices stay home.

Vote how you will. When serving as a Humble Boy, protect everyone else's right to do the same.

How We Work

What We Do

  • De-escalate interpersonal conflict.
  • Observe changing safety conditions.
  • Support people who are at risk of harm.
  • Create space and assist with safe movement or separation.
  • Communicate useful safety information.
  • Work in buddy teams and hand off when another peacekeeper is better positioned to help.
  • Teach de-escalation and nonviolent peacekeeping skills publicly.

What We Do Not Do

  • Organize protests as Humble Boys.
  • Endorse an event's political position simply by being present.
  • Decide who deserves protection based on politics or identity.
  • Act as law enforcement.
  • Retaliate.
  • Deliberately escalate conflict.
  • Use HB peacekeeping work to advance a member's personal politics.

Doctrine

  • Nonviolence.
  • Dignity.
  • Courage without martyrdom.
  • Listening without submission.
  • Neutrality without passivity.
  • Humility without timidity.

A Humble Boy stands between harm and people, keeps ego out of the work, and tells the truth.

Who Can Represent HB

Anyone can learn these skills and strive to live by these principles. Representing Humble Boys in the field is different. HB peacekeepers must complete required training, agree to our conduct standards, and be authorized by the organization.

Training

Humble Boys makes its current de-escalation training available to the public. Learn CLARA, Grey Rock, buddy doctrine, self-regulation, field decision-making, and other tools we teach for preventing and reducing harm.

Request Support

Organizations planning explicitly nonviolent events may request Humble Boys peacekeeping support. Political agreement with HB is not required. Deployment depends on available trained personnel, necessary safety information, and whether HB can operate effectively in the conditions presented.
